The Slovenian national team did not manage to qualify for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, because, after the initial victory over Algeria, it was easily defeated by Germany and Sweden at the qualifying tournament in Berlin.
In the last round, the selection of Ljubomir Vranješ had the opportunity to fight for the goal in a direct clash with the Scandinavians, but it was a much weaker opponent than the world runners-up and easily lost.
After the elimination in the second round of the World Cup in Egypt, the selector Ljubomir Vranješ suffered an even heavier blow on the bench of the Slovenian national team, and commented on it as follows:
-During the preparations for this weekend in Berlin, we had a lot of problems with injuries. We had to make changes in the defense, and we were too predictable in the attack, due to the low lineup we were forced to. The realization was not good in the whole tournament, there are a lot of things that I am not satisfied with in the last matches. Realistically, both the Germans and the Swedes have a better team than us, but despite that, I believed until the end that we could succeed – said Vranjes.
